Tennessee Rotarians have a rich history dating back to 1914, only nine years after Paul Harris founded what is now referred to as "ROTARY/One" in Chicago, Illinois in 1905. The first Rotary Club formed in the Volunteer State was that of Nashville. Shortly thereafter, the clubs of Memphis and Chattanooga were formed. Then came Knoxville in 1915 and the Rotary Club of Jackson on August 1, 1916. Our club is only the fifth club chartered in Tennessee and, today, is the second longest-serving club in District 6760 - middle and west Tennessee, outside metropolitan Memphis.
Much has happend since that hot August day in West Tennessee in 1916, so today there is an effort to compile stories, photos and information about the eighty-nine year history of our Club. This unofficial project is part of the preparation for the Rotary Club of Jackson's 90th anniversary in 2006. It is anticipated that a history of the club, either published on-line or in book form, will be made available during the 2006-2007 Rotary Year.
To contribute to this project, arrange to share your personal records, photos, programs and other information by contacting Kevin Barron, chair of the 2005-2006 public relations committee via e-mail or phone (731-660-8786).
