Rotary Share Your Life:
A Cause Worth Supporting.

At a Share Your Life presentation earlier this Rotary Year.
Rotary Share Your Life was at the Franklin Morning Club this past May 17th, 2006 . Presenting the attributes of Organ and Tissue donation were quest speakers Jennifer Griffith, Public Education with Tennessee Donor Services and myself, Tom Meredith of Green Hills Rotary. Rotary Share Your Life has a mission to bring about a better quality of life for those who need human tissue transplants, and furthermore toward extending life for those in need of human organs. This is actually being accomplished through Rotarians as we educate the general public with organ and tissue donor awareness. Signing a donor card and discussing your wishes with your Family is the basic key toward lowering the numbers on today's waiting list.
On May 17th a contribution for $1,000 dollars was presented (left to right) by Mr. Dan McCormick, Franklin Morning Club Rotarian and Williamson County Share Your Life Chairperson., to Mr. Boyd D. Fulton, PDG, Green Hills Club Rotarian and Chairman of the Rotary Share Your Life Program. Standing by and watching is Jennifer Griffith, Public Education, Tennessee Donor Services, and Tom Meredith, Green Hills Club Rotarian and Two Time Donor Father.
Boyd D. Fulton's dream of helping others through Organ and Tissue donation is happening through the efforts of Rotary Share Your Life, and participating Rotary Clubs like Franklin Morning.
Thank you Franklin Morning Rotarians!

District Training Seminar
Saturday, August 12, 2006
Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN
9:00am - 4:00pm
|
Each club is asked to send their club Youth Exchange Officer (YEO) or a representative. You will not want to miss this day of youth exchange activities. We will hear from our two returning Tennessee students, Kacey Rice and Kaitlyn Hamilton, who have spent the last 11 months in the Netherlands and Germany, respectively. Kacey is sponsored by the Lewisburg RC: Kaitlyn is sponsored by the Columbia Noon Rotary Club. This will also be an opportunity to meet our new international in-bound students. It appears that District 6760 will host up to seven students for the coming year, beginning in August, 2006.
In addition, Alan Wylie, our friend and long-time youth exchange officer from Houston, Texas will be present to train all attending Rotarians on recent changes in the Rotary International youth exchange program. Please mark your calendar for August 12, 2006 for this district-wide event.

FYI: History of Rotary Youth Exchange
|
Since 1927, students and host families all over the world have had their horizons broadened and their lives enriched by the generosity of Rotary's Youth Exchange program. Administered by Rotary clubs, districts and multidistrict groups, the program today involves more than 82 countries and over 8,000 students each year.
The first documented exchanges date back to 1927, when the Rotary Club of Nice, France, initiated exchanges with European students. Exchanges between clubs in California, USA, and Latin American countries began in 1939, and exchange activities spread to the eastern United States in 1958. In 1972, the RI Board of Directors agreed to recommend Youth Exchange to clubs worldwide as a worthwhile international activity that promotes global peace and understanding.

First District RYLA Scheduled:
Student Nominations now Accepted
It’s time to get ready for District 6760’s first ever Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) experience. It will be held July 9, 10, & 11 at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.
This is a three-day experiential leadership course that is only available to incoming (Fall 2006) high school sophomores and juniors(10th and 11th grades). It is indeed an honor to be selected for this award and it should be promoted in that manner. Participants should be screened competitively and selected based on merit and leadership potential. Each club can set their own parameters in this regard.

The Program
Award winners will stay in APSU dorms and eat in their food service courts during their stay. A variety of exciting activities directed at this age group to enhance leadership traits and provide team-building experiences will be undertaken. The scheduled events for the program are being developed by a Vanderbilt University professor who teaches leadership full-time. He is a District 6760 Rotarian, as well. There is a banquet at the end of the program for the award recipients and their families on Tuesday evening. At that time they will be formally presented their awards. Those selected for the program need only agree to stay for the entire period of time to be accepted. The program will be more than adequately chaperoned and staffed by Rotarians from our District.
The Search
So where do you go to find qualified applicants for RYLA consideration? Your local high schools are the obvious place. Current members of an Interact club may make great candidates. I have found that hoping to have guidance counselors take up your cause and spread the word may be wishful thinking. This is a busy time of the year for them and this may look like a lower priority item. If you can find a “crusader” in the school to assist in the form of a principle, teacher, or staff person, more power to you. Otherwise, you need to take charge of this yourself and seek out the interested and qualified folks personally.
Get the flyers out and look around your own club first. There is no restriction regarding relationship to a Rotarian for this event. Qualified children and grandchildren of Rotarians are eligible. Planning demands you get going soon as there is not much time left in the school year. Your RYLA selections need to be accomplished by June 1st and forwarded to me to allow us to prepare as great an event as possible for these young people.
