OUR DISTRICT LOSES A FRIEND,
LEADER & DEDICATED ROTARIAN

Mr. David Smith
[We are] so saddened to report to you that our fellow Rotarian and my friend, David Smith, died [on Sunday at] about 8:00 a.m. A memorial service [was] be held Wednesday, March 15 at noon at the Brook Hollow Baptist Church at 678 Brook Hollow Road. Visitation [was] from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 14 at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 660 Thompson Lane.
Anyone who knew David for very long realized that he was a rare gem with a kind spirit, an incredible smile and a big, kind heart. For me, this is a especially difficult loss as David and I spent many hours together working on the Rotary bookkeeping as he patiently tried to make me understand debits and credits.
During the 3 years that he served as treasurer for our [Nashville] Rotary Club, David and I shared lots of stories; actually David told the stories and I listened always fascinated by his involvement in so many projects and so many business ventures. We developed a close bond and I will hold those stories and that big smile in my heart forever. My heart breaks for David's wife, Mary Lu, and their three children, their spouses and grandchildren. The obituary was in Monday's Tennessean, on page 5B.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in honor of David Smith to Brook Hollow Baptist Church, 678 Brook Hollow Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37205 or to Room in the Inn, 532 8th Ave S, Nashville, 37203.

"BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS"
CLUB PROJECT UPDATE
"The Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club wishes to thank everyone for their attendance and participation in our "2006 Breakfast of Champions", Chris Fletcher - President.
By GREG MENZA
The Daily Herald Staff Writer
It’s not often that folks have the opportunity to meet and greet the array of celebrities that showed up for just the purpose Saturday morning at Columbia Academy’s Vest Hall. Most of the 200 people who registered to attend the Columbia Rotary Club’s Breakfast of Champions Breakfast made it to the event despite Saturday morning’s snowstorm. For their determination the Rotary Club guests shook hands, got autographs and had their pictures taken Gov. Phil Bredesen, Congressman Lincoln Davis, State Rep. Tom DuBois, radio personality Steve Gill, beauty queen Lynnette Cole and professional boxers James "Spider" Webb, Sammy Sparkman and Jerome "The Killa" Pillow. The attendance of wide age group including youngsters to grand parents made the event an enjoyable family event. Kerry Harris brought his son Nathan who pressed the flesh with Rep. DuBois and enjoyed meeting some of the area’s most widely known athletes when the boxers took turns signing autographs. The obvious favorite to get pictures taken with was former Columbia Academy student and Miss U.S.A. 2000 Lynette Cole. Gov. Bredesen also was warmly greeted by those in attendance and was announced as the 2006 Mule Day Grand Marshal.

This Girl Scout knows how to surround herself with Champions: (left to right) Lincoln Davis; Girl Scout; Lynette Cole and Governor Bredesen.

Sammy Sparkman is all smiles … it could be because of the cereal box beside him. More likely it was the friendly crowd asking for his autograph.

"WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE"
DISTRICT PROJECT UPDATE
Our largest and most comprehensive project has been The Honduras Project. We also have clubs working in Guatemala. Here's more on these projects:
The Honduras Project

Of the 65 clubs in DISTRICT 6760, 18 clubs have joined together along with the Choluteca, Honduras Club for this project.
The project furnished potable water to 38 homes by drilling a well capable of meeting the needs of the community of La Libretad of El Triunfo, Honduras. A 10,000 gallon storage tank was constructed with chlorinator and gravity fed distribution system built to each participating home. In addition, primary electrical service was built to power the pump. A secondary electrical distribution grid was built to furnish each of the 38 homes with electricity. Each home was wired with two lights and two electrical wall boxes. For each home without a "pila" (a sort of an above ground cistern) or a substandard pila, a pila was built.
THIRTY-TWO Rotary members or friends of Rotary participated in this project. Four Rotary clubs were represented on-site. We worked closely and in total harmony with both the Choluteca, Honduras Club and the entire community of La Libretad. We worked hand-in-hand with the local Peace Corps volunteer, Jon Carson. The Peace Corps contributed $4000 to the project. Total cost of the project has not been tabulated but will be close to $36,000.
The outcome was that the community of La Libretad was furnished with both a 24-hour potable water system and an electrical system where there had been neither before. In addition, unbreakable friendships were forged between members of the community who worked shoulder-to-shoulder with our Rotarians. There is an educational system in place so that both the water and electrical systems can be maintained for generations to come. The number of immediate beneficiaries were approximately 240 persons but the ultimate beneficiaries will number in the thousands. Additional district clubs are doing water projects in Guatemala. These two projects are incomplete at this time. I will forward specifics as they become available.
In entering the final trimester of this Rotary year, if there are still clubs that have not found an WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT to meet the requirements of the PRESIDENTIAL CITATION, contact Dan Florida at dflorida@mtemc.com or me at honduron@yahoo.com or (615)794-9455.
The Guatemala Project
Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club has participated in a mission trip to Guatemala for over 10 years. It has basically been a dental mission with a surgical component occasionally.
This year we are planning to go the first week in June. We have about 17 committed so far. Two dentists, an optometrist ,a pediatrician, an othopedic surgeon, ortho scrub nurse, nurse anesthetist, other club members and some of our older children. We are still looking for 4-5 more to help assist the docs.
We are taking supplies and 3,000 pairs of glasses donated by the Lions Club. We plan to work from 2 locations, the Remar Orphanage and Safe Passage, a program that works with people who live at the City Dump.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ronnie Strickland

I. Introduction
Our Rotary District (6760) is planning a couples oriented, personally financed Friendship Exchange to Perth, Western Australia (Rotary District 9470) in October 2006.
The emphasis throughout the Friendship Exchange will be social and cultural rather than professional and/or academic, which is the hallmark of Rotary International sponsored youth, ambassadorial, and group study exchanges. That said, if you make the trip, you will be asked to submit biographical information which will be used in matching you with Rotary hosts in Western Australia. While in Western Australia) Oct 21 – Oct 31, we will be hosted by fellow Rotarians in their homes, thus greatly reducing the cost to District 6760 participants. Prior to the "hosted" portion of the Friendship Exchange, there will be an optional 8 day (from Oct 13 to Oct 20) tour of sites in the eastern portion of Australia including Sydney, Cairns and Ayers Rock. Following the "hosted" portion of the Friendship Exchange in Western Australia, there will a second optional 7 day visit (from Nov 1 to Nov 7) to New Zealand including stops in Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.
II. Itinerary
A. October 13 thru October 20 –
Optional pre-Western Australia visit to eastern Australia including "musts"
> Sydney’s Architectural Gem – the World Famous Opera House
> Blue Mountain and a taste of the Outback
> Museums for every interest
> Harbor Ferry Rides and Exquisite Beaches
> Bridge Climb –not for the feint of heart
> Scuba diving and glass bottom boat excursions on the incredible Great Barrier Reef (World’s Largest Living Coral Reef)
> Breathtaking Sunrise and Sunset at Ayers Rock (Sacred Aboriginal Outback Site)
B. October 21 thru October 31
> Western Australia – planned and coordinated by Rotary District 9470, expected to include sites in and around Perth, Fremantle (Port City), as well as the Outback and Wine Country.
C. November 1 thru November 8
> Optional Post- Western Australia visit to New Zealand including "musts", North and South Islands
> Bundle up for Antarctica Exhibit depicting early South Pole explorers
> Visit the Modern Antarctica Exhibit in Auckland
> Enjoy the Unique Maori (Native Pacific Islanders) Museum in Auckland
> Bungee Jumping Capital of the World (Queenstown) for the truly daring, or Jet Boating the Rapids for the Less Adventurous
> Stroll thru the Lush Botanical Gardens in Christchurch
> Other Outdoor Adventure Activities are Available
III. Logistics
Because the Friendship Exchange is personally financed, and realizing that participants may wish to use airline travel points, and desire maximum travel flexibility, no attempt will be made to purchase a block of tickets or hotel rooms
Rotarian Dana C. McLendon, Jr., downtown Nashville Club and Mary Huston McLendon, (both have previously visited Australia and New Zealand), will serve as Friendship Exchange Leaders. A deposit will be collected in advance by the Friendship Exchange leaders, and used to cover certain group expenses such as necessary administrative costs, some ground transportation, and medical evacuation/ remains repatriation insurance for all participants. Closer to the time of the trip, after more detailed budgeting and input from participants, additional deposit amounts may be required. To assist you in planning, you will receive a detailed copy of the Friendship Exchange Leaders’ flight schedules, hotel reservations and a location and a window of time during which you will need to link up with the leaders regardless of your individual travel arrangements. Unless cost considerations dictate otherwise, please book yourselves on the same flights and at the same hotels as the exchange leaders. We have found round trip coach fares between Nashville and Perth to be approximately $2,000. Internal flights within Australia and New Zealand, as well as the flight to Auckland, New Zealand, are additional. (Trip Leaders will provide money saving "lessons learned" to assist participants in their travel planning).
IV Application
Space is limited to the first 7 Rotarians who complete and submit the application with a deposit of $ 350 per person ($700 per couple). In the event demand is great enough, we plan to schedule a second Friendship Exchange to Western Australia in 2007; however, the first trip must be fully booked to warrant a second one. In the event there is not room on the first Friendship Exchange, and you do not wish your deposit to be held for the second Friendship Exchange, it will be returned to you in full.
