GOVERNOR'S NOTES

February 22, 2006

RI President-elect

William B. Boyd
of New Zealand

A LOOK AHEAD INTO 2006-2007

Rotary International's incoming president, William B. Boyd, has chosen Lead the Way as the theme for the 2006–07 Rotary year.

"This will be my theme and an affirmation of my belief in the power of Rotarians to change the world, one positive act at a time," he told incoming district governors at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 17 February.

Every year at the assembly, Rotary's incoming president unveils a theme for the next Rotary year. The current theme under RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar is Service Above Self, the same as Rotary's longtime motto.

The challenge of finding a theme is that it must be short, inspirational, and translatable. Boyd doesn't remember the moment Lead the Way popped into his head. All he knows it that "it just felt right."

Since the governors-elect attend the International Assembly to learn more about becoming successful leaders in their districts, Boyd's theme was especially pertinent to the audience.

"In the coming year, I ask each of you to take your places as leaders in your districts and your communities," Boyd told the incoming governors. "I ask each of you to lead in the Rotary way, by living as role models of tolerance, unselfishness, and integrity. And because the best leaders have humility, I ask you to do all of this with friendliness and a smile, so that others will be happy to walk beside you."

Boyd concluded by saying, "As Rotarians, we are not content to let matters stay the way they have always been in our clubs or in our communities. We are not content with the status quo, and we do not look at a problem only to say someone else will solve it. We are the ones who ask, 'Why not us?' We are the ones with the skills and the desire to build a better future. And we are the ones who must Lead the Way."

by Tiffany Woods, senior editor of The Rotarian.

2007 RI Council on Legislation

 April 22-28, 2007 in Chicago

The triennial Council on Legislation is an important part of Rotary’s governance process. While the Board of Directors sets policies for Rotary International, the Council on Legislation is where Rotary clubs have their say in the governance of the association.

Every three years each district sends a representative to the Council, which reviews legislation, much as a parliament would. Every club and district is entitled to submit legislation to the Council, and some of the most important work of Rotary is a result of Council action. The next council will be convened in June 2007

Any club wishing to propose legislation to the Council on Legislation must first approve it at a club meeting. Clubs may wish to consult with the district’s representative to the Council on Legislation or another Rotarian with Council experience to ensure that their enactment or resolution is properly drafted.

Once the club approves the legislation, it should be forwarded to the district governor for consideration at the district level. All club legislation must be endorsed at the district level at the district conference in order to go forward to the Council. Club-proposed legislation must be submitted to District Governor Glen Vanderford no later than April 1, 2006. For forms and instructions, see the RI website  here.

"BIENVENIDO A HONDURAS"

Printed from a letter to several District 6760 Rotarians

from Ronnie Strickland, as provided by DG Glen Vanderford

Hello Everyone:

I just wanted to tell you that I am getting ready to close shop.  I am very busy just closing down my house and taking care of last minute business.  For you who were down here, I have to go to the bank for the last time, so if you need limpera, let me know.  I also bought 4 boxes of malaria pills.  If anyone wants me to get some to bring back, let me know this too.

Tomorrow I will meet with Jon, Sergio, Roger and Douglas to be sure we are on the same sheet of music in all phases.  Polly, got your questions and after the meeting will try to get back to you.  If not, then when I get back.  I would like to have a mini meeting do discuss Matching Grant reconciliation.  With the job everyone did and pitching in it looks as if we will finish in the red about $48 but I have about $300 in the Agua Fria pump repair project that I can use to cover that and anything else that might pop up.  For those of you who are aware of the internal politics, I told Roger today that the Marcovia Project looks more like the one that we needed to do since it involved water.  I´ll know more tomorrow after our meeting.  I want to tell everyone again, those who trecked down here as well as those who pitched in but couldn´t come down, what a great job eveyone did.  I also want to
say that this was not just a ¨feel good¨ project, but one of substance that will change the lives of a significant number of people for generations.

Everyone needs to feel good about what your efforts accomplished.   If you ever question it, just look at your pictures or ask someone who went.  I really hate to leave but we only have a year to get ready again.

I hope everyone will be curious enough to come to the post-project get together we will have soon.  I´ll write a more comprehensive report when I get back to your planet.  For now I have to get ready to leave on that silver Starship American and head north.

Thanks again, everyone of you, for what you have done.

-- Ronnie

of Your Travel List!

A message from Edward Vaughan

Chair, D6760 Rotary Friendship Exchange

I.  Introduction

Our Rotary District (6760) is planning a couples oriented, personally
financed Friendship Exchange to Perth , Western Australia (Rotary District 9470) in October 2006.

The emphasis throughout the Friendship Exchange will be social and cultural rather than professional and/or academic, which is the hallmark of Rotary International sponsored youth, ambassadorial, and group study exchanges.  That said, if you make the trip, you will be asked to submit biographical information which will be used in matching you with Rotary hosts in Western Australia.

While in Western Australia) Oct 21 - Oct 31, we will be hosted by fellow Rotarians in their homes, thus greatly reducing the cost to District 6760 participants.  Prior to the "hosted" portion of the Friendship Exchange, there will be an optional 8 day (from Oct 13 to Oct 20) tour of sites in the eastern portion of Australia including Sydney, Cairns and Ayers Rock.   Following the "hosted" portion of the Friendship Exchange in Western Australia, there will a second optional 7 day visit (from Nov 1 to Nov 7) to New Zealand including stops in Auckland, Christ Church and Queenstown.

II.  Itinerary

A.   October 13 thru October 20 - Optional  pre-Western Australia visit to eastern Australia including:

  *  Sydney's Architectural Gem - the World Famous Opera House;
  *  Blue Mountain and a taste of the Outback;
  *  Museums for every interest;
  *  Harbor Ferry Rides and Exquisite Beaches;
  *  Bridge Climb -not for the feint of heart;
  * Scuba diving and glass bottom boat excursions on the incredible
Great Barrier Reef (World's Largest Living Coral Reef);
  *        Breathtaking Sunrise and Sunset at Ayers Rock (Sacred
Aboriginal Site in Outback).

B.  October 21 thru October 31 - Western Australia - planned and coordinated by Rotary District 9470, xpected to include sites in and around Perth, Fremantle (Port City), as ell as the Outback and Wine Country.

C.  November 1 thru November 8 - Optional Post-Western Australia visit to New Zealand including:

  *  North and South Islands;
  *  Bundle up for Antarctica Exhibit depicting early South Pole
explorers;
  *  Visit the Modern Antarctica Exhibit in Auckland;
  *  Enjoy the Unique Maori (Native Pacific Islanders) Museum in
Auckland;
  *  Bungee Jumping Capital of the World (Queenstown) for the truly
daring, or Jet Boating the Rapids for the Less Adventurous;
  *  Stroll thru the Lush Botanical Gardens in Christ Church;
  *  Other Outdoor Adventure Activities are Available.

III.  Logistics

Because the Friendship Exchange is personally financed, and realizing that participants may wish to use airline travel points, and desire maximum travel flexibility, no attempt will be made to purchase a block of  tickets or hotel rooms.  However, a deposit will be collected in advance by the Friendship Exchange leaders.  (Rotarian Dana C. McLendon, Jr., downtown Nashville Club and Mary Huston McLendon.) and used to cover certain minor group expenses such as necessary administrative costs, some ground transportation, and medical evacuation/ remains repatriation insurance for all participants.  Closer to the time of the trip, after more detailed budgeting, additional deposit amounts may be required.

To assist you in your planning, you will receive a copy of the Friendship Exchange Leaders' flight schedules, hotel reservations and a location and a window of time during which you will need to link up with the leaders regardless of your individual travel arrangements.  We have found round trip coach fares between Nashville and Perth to be approximately $2,000.  Internal flights within Australia and New Zealand, as well as the flight to Auckland are additional. (Trip Leaders will provide money saving "lessons learned" to assist participants in their travel planning).

IV.  Application

Space is limited to the first (probably will be 7) Rotarians who complete and submit the application with a deposit of $ 250 per person ($500 per couple).  In the event demand is great enough, we plan to schedule a second Friendship Exchange to Western Australia in the timeframe between February 20 and March 26, 2007;  however, the first trip must be fully booked to warrant a second one.

In the event there is not room on the first Friendship Exchange, and you do not wish your deposit to be held for the second Friendship Exchange, it will be returned to you in full.

Personal Background & Interests

Although, I was born in Nelson New Zealand, the 23rd October 1970. I have lived in Australia my whole life except the first three months! I am an Australian citizen and love it.  I come from a large family, an older brother and sister and a younger brother and sister.

I attended Edith Cowan University and have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Education.  I am single with no children.

I have taught for four years. I spent one year teaching English in Japan. My Japanese experience led me into teaching primary school. After many years in a huge range of jobs from sales, hospitality, mining, pearl farming, prawn trawling and working with children with cancer, I have now finally found a life long vocation in teaching.

Vocational Interests

I would like to undertake the following vocational activities during the tour:

> Three days in different primary schools (one private school, two public schools in different socio economic areas), teach a lesson on Australia, discuss with Tennessee teachers the curriculum used, reporting methods to parents, successful behaviour management models and behaviour management polices.

>  Before I leave for the USA I would like to organise with one class a pen pal email exchange between Tennessee students and my Australian students. Our students can exchange information about their state, state emblems, industries, native animals and what it means to them to be Western Australian or Tennessean. We could exchange photos of our school environment and a typical school day.

>  One day spent with a documentary film crew or maker, or with a film crew for local news. I would like to see a news story filmed, then edited and go to air all in one day.

>  While in Tennessee I would love to visit some of the great attractions; the Grand Old Opry, Graceland, Parthenon, Travellers Plantations and Museum, Jackson River Cruises, Smokey Mountains - Dollywood, and Ruby Falls. I love nature and fishing and would love to get out into the natural environment of Tennessee. Even though I am not a whiskey drinker would like to sample the local brews.

Accommodation & Diet

I have hayfever.  I am allergic to cats and dogs.  I am a non smoker.
