GOVERNOR'S NOTES

February 15, 2006

A Message from The President

as we celebrate

WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH

Dear fellow Rotarians:

February is World Understanding Month, a time when Rotarians, clubs and districts think of international service projects. During my trips around the world, I have seen many wonderful projects where several countries have been involved.

One such project is Ciudad de los Niños, run by the Rotary Club de San Borja, Peru . The club has developed 18 programs for an orphanage of 550 boys. The youngsters can stay there until they are 18 years old — boys who otherwise would not have had a home to go to or daily food.

In another joint effort, the Rotary Club of Hoensbroeck, The Netherlands, has worked with the government of The Netherlands to set up a sewing workshop and the construction of dormitories. The club has also contributed funds for a kitchen and dining room equipment. District 7950 (Massachusetts, USA) has participated in building a shoe workshop and a hen house — the latter expanded with the help of the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard (part of District 7950). A carpentry workshop and a bakery have been built with the help of the Rotary Club of Saxmundham, England.

All the projects are meeting the needs of what they were intended for — to generate income for the Ciudad de los Niños so that the young residents can learn a profession.

Another worthy project is located in Senegal, called "One Million Trees to grow the Sahel Green Again." This is a long-term project, also supported by Rotary clubs in England, France, Senegal, and other countries, resulted in the planting of more than 85,000 trees in the Sahel region of Africa by the end of 2003. This is truly an international project — Rotary at its best!

Another project can be found in Argentina — the National Braille Publisher in Buenos Aires. This organization provides equipment for the blind and visually impaired. Special software digitally reads print on a computer, then verbally describes what is on the screen, allowing the user to process the text, transcribe electronic correspondence and navigate the Internet. The funding for this project was the result of a combined effort of The Rotary Foundation of RI, the Rotary Club of Buenos Aires and District 7000 (Puerto Rico).

These are just a few of the fine Rotarian efforts that demonstrate the power of cooperation that make a positive difference in our communities and in our world. The size of your Rotary club, district or project does not matter when you reach out to other Rotarians beyond your own communities and countries. It is our motto of Service Above Self and our cooperation on service projects that make a difference in the world.

Dee Ann Culbreath

Selected to Serve as Our District Governor

In Rotary Year 2008-2009

The D6760 Nominations Committee of the D6760 College of Governors met at the Renaissance Center, Dickson, TN on Saturday, January 21, 2006 for the purpose of selecting a district governor for the 2008-2009 Rotary year.  The committee interviewed two (2) exceptionally qualified and deserving candidates; Dee Ann Culbreath and Larry Boyd.  The committee spent one hour interviewing each candidate.  - Per a written report from Chair of the Nominations Committee,PDG Jim Johnston to DG Glen Vanderford, dated January 23, 2006.

Currently serving as District Secretary, Culbreath's designation as nominee for District Governor in 2008-2009, follows recent service as president of the Jackson Rotary Club in 2004-2005 and dedicated service in numerous other roles within the club and district.  Culbreath's father, PDG Ed Perkins of McKenzie, TN served as District  Governor in Rotary year 1980-1981.

2007 RI Council on Legislation

 April 22-28, 2007 in Chicago

The triennial Council on Legislation is an important part of Rotary’s governance process. While the Board of Directors sets policies for Rotary International, the Council on Legislation is where Rotary clubs have their say in the governance of the association.

Every three years each district sends a representative to the Council, which reviews legislation, much as a parliament would. Every club and district is entitled to submit legislation to the Council, and some of the most important work of Rotary is a result of Council action. The next council will be convened in June 2007

Any club wishing to propose legislation to the Council on Legislation must first approve it at a club meeting. Clubs may wish to consult with the district’s representative to the Council on Legislation or another Rotarian with Council experience to ensure that their enactment or resolution is properly drafted.

Once the club approves the legislation, it should be forwarded to the district governor for consideration at the district level. All club legislation must be endorsed at the district level at the district conference in order to go forward to the Council. Club-proposed legislation must be submitted to District Governor Glen Vanderford no later than April 1, 2006.  For forms and instructions, see the RI website here.

Share Your Life Committees Expanded

by Leaders within District 6760

During the month of January 2006, Mr. Boyd D. Fulton, PDG Dist 6760 and Chairman of the "Share Your Life" Rotary Organ, Tissue and Eye Donor Program (not pictured). Conducted a 6760 District Level Organ / Tissue training session at Columbia Community College with: (left to right) DGN Rufus Clifford, MD, Mr. Dan McCormick, Franklin Rotary, Mr. Jim Springer, Columbia Rotary, and Mr. Jim Sowell, Dickson Rotary. All of whom happen to be graduates of the "District Leadership Academy", and  now have volunteered to establish further Share Your Life Club Committees within District 6760.

Rotary District 6760 as well as Tennessee Rotary Districts 6800, 6780, and 6570 have been selected to build a "Share Your Life Model" that will be later shared on a National level. The "Share Your Life committee members are committed to reduce the present organ / tissue patient waiting list of over 80,000 through better awareness, and again Tennessee Rotarians are leading the way.

Since 1996, The Hendersonville Morning Rotary Club has embraced international service through an annual dental and medical mission to Guatemala. Inspired by club member Pediatric Dentist Dr. Bill Taylor who had participated in similar missions, former Rotary President Hugh Atkinson set the goal to develop a program for the local club. Teams composed of Dentists, Pediatricians, Nurses, other professionals and lay assistants partnered with the Guatemala City Las Americas Rotarians and have since aided thousands of Guatemalans (primarily children) in desperate need of medical and dental diagnosis and treatment.

New!  ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

TO AUSTRALIA

Summary of a message from Edward Vaughan

Chair, D6760 Rotary Friendship Exchange

Are you looking for a challenging, exciting Rotary experience?  No, I am not thinking about a service project.  What I have in mind is a Rotary Friendship Exchange!  You and a spouse, friend or even just by yourself can join a group of fellow Rotarians from D6760 and spend 2-3 weeks in Australia visiting and sight-seeing with Rotarians.  The only requirement is time and willingness to host a Rotarian in your home, in return, for 5-7 days.

As background, D6760 will partner with D9470, Western Australia, for a Rotary Friendship Exchange in 2006/2007.  We will be receiving their team for 2 weeks in July-August.  Our team will travel "down under" sometime during October 2006.  Application forms and more information to follow in future updates.

Note that group size is limited.  We will receive applications of interest on a first-come-first-served basis when available.  Contact Ed Vaughan at edwardvaughan04@yahoo.com.

The AUSSIES Are Coming!

Part 2

In advance of the Austrialian GSE team's arrival to our district, we'll profile members of that GSE team. Read a bit about the Team and be better hosts while they visit with us in the Volunteer State

LOUISE DURACK

GSE Team Member

District 9470 Western Australia

Biographical Information

Full name:          Louise Durack

Gender:              Female

Date of Birth:       06/07/1978

Email:                louise.durack@wmp.org.au

Vocation:            Social Worker

Personal Background

I come from a long established Western Australian family and have grown up, been educated and worked in Perth. I have a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Anthropology and Politics from the University of Western Australia (UWA) and in 2004 I added a Bachelor of Social Work, also from UWA, to my qualifications. I am currently working for an organization called Wesley Mission Perth (www.wmp.org.au), employed as a drug and alcohol counselor with a program called Wesley Hearth. Hearth is an in-home counselling service for families affected by parental drug and alcohol use and in this role I work with parents and their kids either individually or as a family group as well as other family members and supportive people and it is a challenging and exciting role.

Vocational Interests

My vocational interests for this trip are in the field that I am currently working – the drug and alcohol sector with an emphasis on families, parenting and early intervention programs and policies. I would welcome the opportunity to visit agencies, both government and non government that administer the Headstart initiative, particularly the Tennessee CARES program run through Tennessee State University. I would also be interested in visiting organizations that are involved in child protection work as well as services, particularly working with substance misuse, involved in early intervention initiatives, perhaps involved with the maternity hospitals. I would be interested to know about the drug and alcohol sector in Tennessee and the availability of treatment facilities and programs. If it was possible to visit other home based services in this sector that would be ideal and I would like to visit the Vanderbilt Addiction Centre.

Accommodation & Diet

Unfortunately I am allergic to cats and lettuce so I guess I need to avoid these. I do not have a preference about being placed with a fellow team member for the home stay. I am really looking forward to coming to Tennessee with our team and getting to know all of you.
