A Message About
"FAMILY OF ROTARY MONTH"
by Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar
2005-06 Rotary International President
|
Dear Fellow Rotarians:
It was Past RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe who emphasized the importance of the family of Rotary by creating the Family of Rotary Task Force, continued the following year by 2004-05 RI President Glenn E. Estess Sr. These two gentlemen also urged clubs and districts to start family of Rotary committees. This year, I have discontinued the task force because I feel it has achieved its mission – clubs and districts all over the world have created family of Rotary committees. For those that have not, it is never too late.
It may be worth giving some thought to the question: Just what is the family of Rotary? Of course, each Rotarian has a personal family. Some of these families are very heavily involved in Rotary service, while others are not. This may be for cultural or local reasons. The decision to support Rotary is really up to the individuals and is not something that Rotary International can force upon anybody.
But the family of Rotary can be more than a single family unit. It can represent many aspects of the organization. The RI Board is part of the family of Rotary International. So is each district as well as each club. Each Group Study Exchange team is part of the family of Rotary. So are our Rotaractors and Interactors and our Youth Exchange students studying abroad. Our RI training leaders and all our committees and resource groups form various parts of the family of Rotary. Finally, The Rotary Foundation is a large and important part of our family of Rotary.
It is important that we care about the family of Rotary. It helps us in our work and it creates fellowship and friendship – two of the cornerstones on which Rotary International has been built.
Even though the Family of Rotary Task Force no longer exists, its spirit is very much alive and sound. I urge all those districts and clubs that have not created a family of Rotary committee to start one during the month of December, which is Family Month. By doing so, we honor our commitment to Service Above Self and continue to show the world the great leadership of Rotary International.

Recreational and Vocational Fellowships: Organized by Rotarians representing a wide array of activities and occupations.
Rotary Volunteers: Volunteers learn of opportunities in and beyond their own areas.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards(RYLA): Local Young people 14 to 30 attend leadership training programs. Organized, financed, and run by Rotarians.
World Community Service: Club in one country assisting club in another country in a special project.
Youth Exchange: Secondary school age students go to another country for up to a year of study in tha country. They live with Rotary host families.

CLARKSVILLE ROTARY CLUB
SETS AUCTION DATE

Members of the Clarksville Rotary Club have begun soliciting donations from area businesses for the annual Clarksville Rotary Auction, to be held January 28 at the Clarksville Country Club. Proceeds from the auction will be used for the construction of a Habitat for Humanity House to be sponsored by the club, according to Ed Adkins, club president. "This auction is our biggest fundraising project of the year which is used to support various Clarksville Rotary community projects," said Ed Adkins, club president. Tickets to the auction, which includes a fabulous dinner, are available from any club member for $75. Entertainment will be provided by comedian Jim Gossett, a former Clarksville resident who makes his living as a corporate entertainer and voice-over artist. Rotarians are calling on business prospects who have made donations to previous auctions, but the club is accepting donations of any unused items of value for the auction.

A Special Opportunity is Still Available,
But only until December 31, 2005
It is not often that the U.S. government and IRS provide us with a unique fund development opportunity but that is just what has happened in recent weeks. Between now and December 31, 2005, individuals are allowed to make withdrawals from IRA’s, 401K’s or other tax deferred accounts, give the proceeds to a recognized charity such as The Rotary Foundation and not pay any penalty or tax on the funds withdrawn.
Each individuals tax situation is different, thus, to be certain of the benefits provided by the Katrina Tax Relief Act please consult your own tax advisors before making a retirement fund withdrawal. Specific questions can be directed to TRF Planned Giving Officer Karena Bierman at 847-866-3100 or biermank@rotaryintl.org or Michael Smith at 847-866-3220 or smithmi@rotaryintl.org.
